Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr.sc. techn. Dr. h.c. Michael E. Auer received his Ing. degree (1971) and his Ph.D. degree (1975) with a thesis on “Design and Analysis of ECL Circuits” from the Dresden University of Technology. His working field was the analysis and design of high-speed integrated microelectronic circuits. As a result of this work about ten patents were registered.
From 1974-91 he was an assistant professor at the faculties “Electrical Engineering” and “Informatics” of this university. His research in this time was related to high-speed digital circuit simulations, design systems and platforms for the design and simulation of microelectronic circuits and real time and network programming in UNIX environments.
Furthermore, he undertook research in the field of multi-valued logic circuitry and its application in microelectronics. He received a Dr.sc.techn. degree (Habilitation) with a thesis on “Multi-Valued Logic Circuits” in 1978.
Additional he successful completed an education as Engineering Educator under guidance of Prof. Lichtenegger at TU Dresden.
From 1991-95 he was with F+O Electronic Systems GmbH, Heidelberg (Head of software department). His research there was related to real time and network programming, embedded control systems, programming in C, C++, PERL, as well as system- and network administration of heterogeneous networks with UNIX, VMS and Windows workstations.
The main result during this time was a real-time image processing system for printing machines for the world known HEIDELBERGER Druckmaschinen AG. Together with other colleagues two patents were registered.
In 1995 Michael Auer was appointed as first Professor of Electrical Engineering of the School of Electronics at the new founded Carinthia Tech Institute, Villach, Austria (now Carinthia University of Applied Sciences). He was heavily involved in building up the university as dean, leader of a research group and now head of the Center of Competence in Online Laboratories and Open Learning (CCOL).
Michael Auer has also a teaching position for “Microelectronics” at the University of Klagenfurt, Austria and works as a visiting professor at some universities worldwide.
He gave guest lectures at:
? University of Patras, Greece
? Transylvania University of Brasov, Romania
? Columbia University, USA
? University of Maribor, Slovenia
? Princess Sumaya University for Technology Amman, Jordan
? MIT Boston, USA
? University of Kuwait
His current research is directed to technology enhanced learning and remote working environments.
Michael Auer is a senior member of IEEE and member of ASEE, IGIP, etc., author or co-author of more than 190 publications and leading member of numerous national and international organizations in the field of online technologies.
Besides being a co-chair or member of the Program Committees of several international conferences and workshops he is especially involved in the following international conferences:
- Founder and general chair of the annual International Conference “Interactive Collaborative Learning” (ICL, www.icl-conference.org). Last year’s 18th ICL2015 was core event of the World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF2015) in September in Florence, Italy. ICL2016 will be held in Belfast, UK.
- Founder and general chair of the annual International Conference “Remote Engineering and Virtual Instrumentation” (REV, www.rev-conference.org). The 13th REV2016 has been organized in February 2016 in Madrid, Spain. REV2017 will be held at Columbia University New York, USA
- Co-Founder and chair of the steering committee and conference co-chair of the annual “IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference” (EDUCON, www.educon-conference.org). EDUCON2016 has been organized in April 2016 in Abu Dhabi, UAE. EDUCON2017 will be held in Athens, Greece.
- Co-Founder and member of the Executive Committee of the annual International Conference “E-Learning in the Workplace” (ICELW, www.icelw.org), New York, USA. 9th ICELW2017 will be held in June 2017.
- Founder and Chair of the Scientific Advisory Boards of the International Conferences “Interactive Mobile Communication Technologies and Learning” (IMCL) and “Interactive Computer aided Blended Learning” (ICBL).
In 2009 Michael Auer was appointed as member of the Advisory Board of the European Learning Industry Group (ELIG, http://www.elig.org ). Furthermore he is chair of the Advisory Board of the International E-Learning Association (IELA, www.ielassoc.org ) and member of the Board of Consultants of the International Centre for Innovation in Education (ICIE, http://www.icieparis.net).
Michael Auer is Founder, President and CEO of the “International Association of Online Engineering” (IAOE), a non-governmental organization that promotes the vision of new engineering working environments worldwide with 2.000+ members on all continents.
In September 2010 he was elected as President of the “International Society for Engineering Education” (IGIP). His first term of office as IGIP President was 2010-2014 and last year he was re-elected for the term 2014-2018.
The work of IGIP is especially directed to the pedagogic qualification of engineering educators. More than 1.500 Engineering Educators worldwide bear the title “International Engineering Educator” – Ing.Paed.IGIP, based on the IGIP Prototype Curriculum in Engineering Pedagogy.
Michael Auer is one of the founders and General Secretary of the “Global Online Laboratory Consortium” (GOLC, www.online-lab.org). GOLC is the result of an initiative; started in 2009 at MIT to coordinate the work on educational online laboratories worldwide.
